The Floorplan

The museum building exists in a universe where architectural space is responsive to its collection. Each new acquisition from a parallel universe introduces a quantity of reality previously absent from this one — and the building accommodates it. The floor plan is never quite the same twice.

Chamber I

Floor 1

The Chamber of Persistent Light

Works in which light is not a condition of seeing but the primary object of investigation — natural, artificial, cosmic, electromagnetic. The artists here pursued light with scientific rigour and something indistinguishable from devotion.

Chamber II

Floor 1

The Chamber of Weight and Gesture

Monumental works in which the human body — at labour, in ceremony, in the presence of history — is rendered with the scale and gravity of a public statement. Paintings that weigh something.

Chamber III

Floor 1

The Chamber of the Still Hour

Works of interior stillness — figures alone in rooms, in transit, in the specific quiet of a person who has chosen or been forced into solitude. The hour that refuses to move.

Chamber IV

Floor 1

The Chamber of Living Forms

Works drawn from the organic world — landscape, seascape, the forms of plant and animal and geological time. The world before and after human history, indifferent and extraordinary.

Chamber V

Floor 2

The Chamber of the Singular Face

Portraits and self-portraits — the oldest and most radical act of painting. Each work here is an argument about what a face can and cannot reveal about the person behind it.

Chamber VI

Floor 2

The Chamber of Gold and Shadow

Works organised around the encounter between ornament and darkness — the symbolic, the sacred, the mythic, and the grief-laden. Gold as the colour of things that cost everything.

Chamber VII

Floor 2

The Chamber of Impossible Geographies

Works in which the visible world has been reorganised according to principles other than physics — spaces that could not exist, objects that should not behave as they do, surfaces that open onto the wrong place.

Chamber VIII

Floor 2

The Chamber of Two Voices

Works produced at the intersection of two visual traditions — moments where one culture's way of seeing encountered another's and neither survived the encounter unchanged.
